American Sandwich Bread - ABM or Oven
Entered for safe-keeping, adapted from Cook's Illustrated to use half bread flour and half whole wheat flour. This makes one 9-inch loaf, so I have loaded the ingredients in the order my Zo ABM would prefer, as I am usually lazy about bread. Note: 2 1/4 teaspoons is the amount of yeast in one envelope. I have included directions for use with standard mixer or food processor, which will of course have longer prep times.

Classic Turkey Pesto Sandwich
Here's a great tasting sandwich from my kitchen, to yours! One of our favorites. I keep a round loaf of sliced sourdough in the freezer at all times, just for this sandwich. A good ciabatta would be equally good, I think. You could easily sub your favorite cheese for the provolone, try swiss. Feel free to adjust ingredient amounts to suit your taste. Lovely with a cup of soup or side salad, for a satisfying quick and easy lunch or weeknight meal. Enjoy!

Sandwich cake bukanlah inovasi baru dalam dunia kuliner. Di Finlandia, Swedia, dan Estonia, makanan ini populer dengan sebutan sm?rg?st?rta. Dari jauh, cake ini terlihat seperti cake manis biasa yang bertumpuk-tumpuk, dilapisi krim, dan diberi hiasan. Padahal, seluruh bahan-bahannya seperti sandwich, hanya dengan ukuran yang lebih besar.
Cake gurih asin ini umumnya terbuat dari white atau light rye bread, roti dari biji rye yang lebih padat daripada roti gandum biasa. Isian dan toppingnya bisa disesuaikan dengan selera. Namun, biasanya telur dan mayones menjadi dasar pembuatannya.
Di negara asalnya, liver pat?, buah zaitun, udang, ham, irisan daging, caviar, tomat, mentimun, anggur, irisan lemon, keju, dan salmon asap sering digunakan untuk sandwich cake. Krimnya yang berwarna putih bisa terbuat dari cream cheese, mayones, atau sour cream. Topping atau hiasannya biasanya mencerminkan isinya.
Di Amerika Serikat, cake serupa populer pada pertengahan abad ke-20. Bedanya, jika sandwich cake biasanya berbentuk bujur sangkar atau bundar, sandwich loaf umumnya berbentuk persegi panjang. Kini, sandwich loaf jarang ditemui di Amerika Serikat.
Cake ini terbuat dari roti putih atau whole wheat utuh yang diiris-iris membujur, kemudian di antara lapisannya diberi isian. Salad telur, ayam, ham, tuna, dan cheese spread adalah isian umum sandwich loaf. Namun, ada pula yang mengisinya dengan selai kacang, jelly, dan salad tofu.
Setelah disusun, tumpukan roti dan isiannya dilapisi dengan whipped cream cheese yang terkadang diberi pewarna makanan. Umumnya garnish yang digunakan adalah buah zaitun, peterseli, anggur, dan carrot curls (irisan tipis memanjang dari wortel yang dibuat spiral).
Anda bisa membuat sandwich cake/loaf bertema daging, ikan, kombinasi keju dan daging, atau serba sayuran. Tumpuk roti dan isiannya lalu simpan di kulkas semalaman. Besoknya baru lapisi cake dengan krim dan garnish. Sajikan dingin dan potong seperti cake manis.
Sandwich cake/loaf ini cocok untuk cemilan saat pesta. Sebaiknya cake ini langsung dihabiskan karena mudah basi. Cara membuatnya mudah, cakenya pun unik dan mengenyangkan. Selamat mencoba!
